what does it mean by on start up, a blue screen comes up saying 'windows is backing up a good registry' once it comes back onto the desktop, i log onto the net, but i cant view secure sites, hotmail, barclays, qxl, hsbc, etc. only cure i have found is to re-install windows, once i reinstall windows, the settings for our wireless lan networking are all lost, have no idea, what to do, or what it means, we have to call engineer, and pay £30 a time!!!

please................:afro:

hmm sounds like your getting registry errors of some kind, your computer must be reverting to the last good registry backup, which must have been made before you registered for Barclays etc, I'm pretty sure these sites leave a registry key on your system to help identify you later, hence if its reverting to an earlier registry set it wont recognise you, I'd normally recommend you format your hard drive and reinstall Windows but you've already done that, try running scan-disk with the box's for "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" both checked and see what it comes up with, sounds like your hard drive may be damaged if its continuously suffering from the same problems even after formatting, it could also be a problem with the master boot record on your drive but you don't really want to go messing with that unless you really need to and you really know what your doing, if the drive is a bit suspect then I'd highly recommend having a look here for a new one HARD DRIVES (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/) you can pick up a 123.5gb drive for just a smidgen under 90 squid oh yes indeedy :)

i haven't formatted any of the drives at the moment, cos if i did i wld loose all the settings for the lan wireless networking, and i'd just get moaned at from other people 'we can get on the net'....

ah then this is most likely the problem, ok before you go formatting and loosing anything give this a try, if you don't already have a startup disk then you need to create one by going into control panel then add/remove programs then click the tab on the top right marked Startup disk jam a blank floppy in the drive then click Create disk, ok now you've got your startup disk you need to restart your PC with the startup disk in the drive, it should boot from the floppy if not you'll need to enter your BIOS and configure your computer to boot from floppy first, when the startup disk boots it'll eventually get to a menu giving you the option to start windows with or without cd-rom or netwrk support, click startup Windows with cd-rom support , it doesn't really matter which one you pick but just stick with that one for now, once its done its jiggery pokery you'll be at the good old trusty dos prompt screen, from here you need to type scanreg /fix minding to leave a space between scanreg and the / this should scan your registry and fix any problems it finds, once it has done this if it does repair the errors type scanreg /backup this will now backup your repaired registry, hopefully this may cure the probs, if not a format may be the only sure fire solution.

yup let us know when you have the error message, just out of interest are you using anti virus software? and is your PC making any unusual noises or running hot? (you will get the temp on the boot screen if its aboce 65 there may be problems) also how old is the PC?

Take a screwdriver and a hammer and close your eyes, take a poke at your pc, and if it doesnt work after that, your screwed! :afro:

brand new but bout a year old :p isn't that an oxymoron?

ok you aint exactly helping me much here, any chance you could shed some light on the other questions I asked? you only answered one of em and it was the least important one lol :p

The phrase "you gotta help me to help you" springs to mind :p
