Ok... for anyone else who has the same query...

Rip open your PC... throw the screws into a corner somewhere... pull all those lovely ribbon cables out of the way, doesnt matter if they come out or not... then pull out all your expansion cards! You could spit on the processor too if you like, it could help. Then simply shuffle up your cards and deal them out until you find one that has a phone style output socket. Somewhere on it should be printed the speed.... and if it isnt, write whatever you like on it with permanent marker :D

Or go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Modem

[DICLAIMER : CBF will take no shiznits from anyone who does what has been described above... no... not the second one.. thats fine.. but if you do the first one thats your fault and not ours buddy! And to be quite honest if you pay attention to anything that Anti-Flag says... EVER... then you should probably seek medical attention straight away. Ta Ta]

Well played AF :) sorry for my lack of attendance but it was the holidays after all and someone had to go on a bender and it might as well have been me :D Flumple I take it your trying to determine whether its your modem thats causing your low conection speeds? if its any consolation most of my mates that are on dial up are seeing speeds comparible to yours, its down to BT's lines I'm afraid, this and the fact most of my mates live in remote areas or small villages, this is due to the fact that the phone lines in these kind of areas were fitted many moons ago and were never really desinged to carry data, and the fact that BT's lines are just poor in general doesn't really help matters, try phoning the company that supply's your phone services ie BT and ask them to turn up the gain on your line, also while your there explain your problem to them they may be able to help, although I wouldn't hold your breath it is BT after all :)

:D yeah option one is a pretty sure fire solution can't go far wrong there, although it may be worth pointing out that you have to write the speed in the top right of your modem card, it wont work anywhere else, alternatively you could paint a set of hot rod flames down the side of your PC using snake oil, I've heard reported speed increases of upto 13% without any loss of stability or discombobulation ;)
