Help!
Microsoft Paint is broken! Whenever I try to open it up, as soon as I click Paint from the Start > Programs > Accessories menu thing, before it even opens up, a popup pops up telling me that the program has performed an "Illegal Operation" and then it closes...
There's nothing I can do, Anti tried sending me a copy of Paint, but it still didn't work... since then, I've tried reinstalling Paint, but it hasn't worked...
Somebody... please help me, I know it's like the most basic program thing, but it's the only one I understand!
Somebody... help... :(

That could be absolutely anything from bad memory to corrupted dll's.
If i'twer me I'd go here (http://members.aol.com/donnaskani/tb4.html) and download the full package including the fresh dll's.
But I'm just like that me...

Would you hate me if I mentioned that kernel32.dll could be among the corrupted files which has something to do with my System Registry?

you could reinstall windows althought that may be going in for overkill.
or simply dont use paint use something better.
look around download sites see if there is anything worth having going for free.
some freeware is quite good.
this is what you get from microsoft software esp if its windows 95 or 98
win2000 and xp seem to be more stable (less prone to crashing).
but then again what can u expect from M$

Microshaft..? Paint is the best! Paint rules, it's one of the only programs I know of that you can paste in copied images... something I frequently need to do when using it.
Thanks for your replies peeeeple, I'll look for another download of Paint and hope it works...

I use an app called 'the gimp' which is basically the same thing. If anything it's easier to use than 'paint'. It got all kool gauzian filters and things as well.
Not sure if you can get it for windows tho...
------------
Microsoft earned the pseudonym Microshaft when documents of their dirty campain to eliminate the Linux operating system were leaked to the net. It's known as the Halloween archives.
When contacted Microsoft were unable to deny the allegations.
...and now here's Wincey with the weather!

Dusti, I went to that site you posted, downloaded a file that claimed to be Paint 97, then when it finished it said the location was C:/Programs/Paint or something like that, but when I went to the location it said, it wasn't there.
I searched on KaZaA but there's no Paint 98 on there, loads of PaintShop Pro files but, they're all different file sizes so I wasn't sure I should download (they're all .exe files)
Oh, if this means anything to anyone...

Means nothing to me... probably means nothing at all but if it holds a clue as to why my Paint won't work... like if one .dll is broken then I should be okay if I just download another one of that..?
Thanks ~

Try this one.
Paint.Zip (http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/Paint95.zip)
It's the older one and should run from anywhere. A cd for example...

Hmm...
I'm finding a lot of bugs listed for the MFC42.DLL file exiting at 0177 on Win98.
A likely cause is that it was mistakenly overwritten by an incorrect file during an installation.
Are you having any other problems? Specificly with Windows-Explorer or Outlook-Express?
Mr. Face
10th July 2003, 07:06 PM
I was getting Illegal Operations on nearly every program at one point, read up on them and found that it was something to do with Outlook Express... the solution, it said was to delete some file somewhere in Outlook but instead I deleted the whole lot, solving the problem, untill now... I still get Illegal Operations every now and then, but not like I used to...
*Remembers first time he saw the "Illegal Operation" error and thought it acctually meant the computer was breaking the law. :(*

Just out of interest, and to make it look like I'm obsessed with my post count (I'm not, honest, the Edit buttion's broken, it just brings up Page Cannot Be Displayed!)...
Is the Linux Operating System any better? Does it have as many errors as Microsoft? *Doubts the latter is possible*

My edit post buttons okay :/
Anyway, if you have the Windows disk I would re-install the system from it at this point. I think you have the option to do this without losing your personal files...
If you just decide to replace that dll file you can get it from Microsock's support site.
As it's a system file you'll have to boot into 'safe-mode' before you can jam it into the correct folder. (so the computer's not using the file when you replace it)
---------------------------------
Linux is far more stable as it's impossable to alter any system files unless you really know what you're doing.
It's not as widely supported as the Windows family in terms of software tho...

But it's beautiful though...
Once you've Linuxed there's no turning back. You'll be smitten and a slave to it's sexy lil RPM's and binaries until it leaves you a spent and broken man...
Soooooo beautiful.....
