Do you believe it's genetic? I think it really can be genetic because some people are quite chubby when they're younger, but in some other people, I wreckon it's entirely down to what they eat and the amount of excercise they 'dont' get, and with the evergrowing amount of take out places, it's no surprise that people are putting on wieght. Also though, there is an evergrowing pressure making people (mostly women/teenagers) feel like they should be your average Angelina Jolie figurine. And as we well know, Mcdonalds have introduced healthier options to their menu, so What are your views?

you get certain genes that make it so you cant be a rake or you wont get to a certain size. but alot obesity is due to overeating and sometimes eating disorders

Obesity is not a simple condition of eating too much. It is now recognised that obesity is a serious, chronic disease. No human condition — not race, religion, gender, ethnicity or disease state — compares to obesity in prevalence and prejudice, mortality and morbidity, sickness and stigma.
Everyone needs a certain amount of body fat for stored energy, heat insulation, shock absorption, and other functions. As a rule, women have more body fat than men. Most health care providers agree that men with more than 25 percent body fat and women with more than 30 percent body fat are obese.
What causes Obesity?
In scientific terms, obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. What causes this imbalance between calories in and calories out may differ from one person to another.GENETIC, environmental, psychological, and other factors may all play a part.
I think its a shame when kids have it
Especially when its not down to a diet !!!

Do we "think" it's genetic is like asking do we "think" trees have feelings, leave it to the scientists.

Yeah, it's really not fair how two different people could have the exact same diet and one puts on wieght and the other doesn't. isnt it true that males have faster metabolisms than females?

In this condition patients gain weight and have constipation and lethargy. They may also notice horseness, dry skin and hair loss. Tissue fluid collects in the face, hands and feet leading to puffiness or oedema.
Overactive thyroid;
In this condition the symptoms result from an excess of thyroid hormone:
Sweating, fatigue and palpitations.
Weight loss.
Increased appetite.
Agitation and anxiety

bah that sounds pretty gnarly Laura is all your skin and hair falling off? anyways I think a lot of peoples weight problems stem from whats known as "meal times" people tend to eat at the same times of day every day regardless if they are really hungry or not, just because its dinner time or tea time and this is where the problems begin, as you are eating food that your body neither needs or is ready to deal with, I find that only eating when your hungry and your body needs food is the best approach to staying in shape, fortunately for me I have a lightning fast metabolism and can consume a weeks worth of callories in a day without negative effect :D

I think it may be down to a little bit of both I think it could be generic.
We've all heard of people with high motabilsm rates, well it is believed that motabilism is generic, My father has a high motabilism and so do I, My olde brother and lil sister both seem to have normal motabilisms (as in they tend to need to balance their diet a lil bit more but do digest foods quite quick)
My younger brother however has a slower motabilsism and tends to put weight on quickly. this i think comes from my mother. As my dad had a high and my mum a low motabilism rate it kinda balanced out among the children. in a sense it's not obesity that is generic but more the motabilism rate that is generic.
So n e 1 agree with me should i call it a better theory than the obesity one??? or jus leave it as is, i know look at me trying to seem all intelligent (i think i stopped that already Woooooo)

Gah! 9 stone isn't alot, I think that food defiantely effects youre skin and tiredness as well as you wieght though (if it does effect your weight), so called 'junk food' makes my skin greasy. Anywho back on topic, i have a friend like you Mullet, he can eat anything, tons in just one day with no effect, and if he eats vegetables..he puts on wight....I'm waiting for the day when it comes back on him LoL >_<

It's supposed to be better for you to eat at regular times during the day. So maybe what people need to do is eat smaller meals, according to their level of hunger. I don't think it's a good idea for people to make their last meal the biggest meal of the day.
Like Stub58 said, metabolism is probably genetic, but I think it's too easy to just say obesity is genetic. It can be due to eating disorders, or simply eating the wrong kinds of food. Does anyone know whether a persons metabolism slows down as they get older?

yeah I see what your saying but I still don't think eating just because its time to eat is the way forward, you only need to look at wild animals you don't see many obese tigers or lions or many obese wild animals full stop, and this is because they only usually eat when they are hungry or need food, also I doubt if there was any obese cavemen or neanderthal types, this is also because early man tended to go and hunt food and eat when he was hungry not because it was 5 o clock, the minute we stopped doing this and started to live life by the clock we were doomed, the act of being hungry is your bodies way of telling you it needs food, if your not hungry and you eat your body stores it as fat as it doesn't require it, this isn't an imediate problem but it does become a problem if you continually eat when not hungry as your body isn't getting a chance to burn of the fat, metabolic rate has a large bearing on how quickly your body will burn of energy and fat, thus people with high metabolism are thin regardless of what they eat, but people with a slow metabolism have to really watch what they eat, metabolic rate does tend to slow with age hence the term "middle aged spread" I suspect this is due to adults not burning of anywhere near as much energy as kids do and there bodies not being quite as efficient, so there metabolic rate slows accordingly, anyways enough of the geek talk eat well and stay good or some mince along those lines :D
