It has been brought to my attention that people have been harrasing other people in PM in the chat room!

If you find this happening to you tell a person with an @.

If there is no one about at the time then follow these instructions:

Keep the PM box open with the text in it!

Press the PRT SCR button ( usually found next to your F12 Key)

Open Paint Programme

Click Edit Tab and choose paste

Crop the image so that only the PM box containing the text can be seen

Save it as a JPG and email it to any to one of the following:

SonicSiss, {Heidi}X Ben Anti-Flag

You will find their email addys in their profiles

We will then deal with the person accordingly!!

I hope that this not only help people who are being harrased but also might deter people from doing it if they know they can ben caught!!

They are trying to change the law so that all chat rooms have to be moderated, which would mean getting rid of pm's, because if they were moderated it would be considered an invasion of privacy. It would be interesting to see how they intend to implement this, because at the moment, pretty much anyone can purchase a chat room program, and most chat rooms have the facility to create your own channels that aren't moderated. I can see the sense in it all, to protect young children from paedophiles and other people from abuse etc., but I would like to know who they will hold accountable, seeing as most moderated chat rooms (like this one) are run by volunteers. At the end of the day, it would be the companies responsibility, unless they hire internet security firms to moderate, which I doubt many would due to cost. There is also the issue of compulsory registration, requiring users to provide address, d.o.b. etc., then to have verified, to prevent young people i.e. 12 year olds posing as 18 years olds, and 40 odd years old known child abusers posing as 16 year old boys. It really is a very complicated issue, with no foreseeable answer, par the ones mentioned above, which would see the end of many, if not most chat rooms. It doesn’t say much for the society of today when things are coming to this.

Hi Andy!

I do agree with you about the issues that anyone really can get a chat room. However, these days it is more advised by people that they use a chat room that is made available by an established site. Ie this one, freeserve, MSN to name but a few, these all do have Hosts and are moderated very well. Also user made chat rooms are less likely to be used by joe public as they are not as easy to advertise as they used to be without paying to get your site towards the begining of the search engine list and is therefore only used by friends of the person who opened the chat room.

If a channel is made on this chat! We can and do moderate it, AFish does make a log of all chat that has taken place and is there for future reference.

I agree entirely with the compulsary registration and also think that that would be a bonus on this site too, freeserve does it and it is difficult to make more that one username.

As for where the responibility would lie I am sure partly with the host of that chat the the offense took place, and secondly with the site itself for not having more viligant hosts.

I would be happy, myself to undergo the usual police checks and such so that people who used the site would be assured that it was run according to the rules that have been set out.

I am also careful about chat content when there is younger users in the room and have also offered a way of being able to record chat in PM which is otherwise impossible with a Java chat room.

I have reccomended our chat room to many people of all ages due to the fact that it is well moderated and that on the whole it is reguar users.

I feel that this could be one of the safest chat rooms available at this time.

I wish the meddling law-makers would keep their dirtly little hands off the Internet. I know they mean well by all these laws, but I assure you, they do not fully understand what they are dealing with. Should the internet really be another Television? A non-offensive nanny that is PG Suitable for All?

Anyhoo - we here at responsible CBFMobile can and do log what we like. It's our chat system, and by using it, users have to appreciate that - just like phone calls and email - all information is or at least can be recorded for use in a court of law if necessary. I don't want to censor the internet, but I do feel strongly (and always have done) that we keep our rooms friendly and inviting to everyone.

Some good posts here about some important issues, very impressive. I like sonics comment about it being one of the safest places - lets try and keep it that way. If that means there are more mods than users at times then so be it :P

Does that include PM's? I know the person participating can take a log like sonic said, but would it not be illegal for CBF or it's volunteers to take a log? It's always something I've wondered about.

There has been a lot of talk about the internet and chatrooms in the last few years and to be honest, chatrooms have been given a bad press. That is why the Government is looking into ways to control it.

Speaking with a lot of years of admin and moderating in chat rooms, it's all a bit of a joke really.

The idea is, to make all commercial sites (non personal sites) that have a chatroom, be fully moderated. In other words, if a chatroom is open, it needs an active moderator in it.

That would not include any room and has a strict age verfication, ie, you need a credit card to join. This law, if it is ever introduced, would only apply to UK commercial sites, which to be honest, would be a disadvantage to UK sites.

The other thing that is being looked into, is the logging of ALL chat transcripts, including PM's, which would pu some people off. This would also disadvantage sites using a chat software that didn't support this, so making them have to pay out more money.

These are only things that are being looked at, there are no definate plans and they have been looking at this for some time, the problem I see, is how would they enforce it? Hire an extra 500 police officers to sit in front of PC screens all day? I don't think so.

I think for now, it's down to the people that run the sites, together with their users, if chat rooms can be 'self policed' then ther will be no need for new laws.

Yes, there can be dangers out there, but I know my teenage daughter is aware of the dangers in chat rooms and education is key to this.

The internet and all its ups and downs is here to stay, it will never be totally policed, so it's down to the users to police it. Having a good community is key, but that doesn't mean there will never be problems, just make sure they are dealt with at the time, a lot of people get a kick out of causing a fuss, don't let them win!

I hate the way The News Brings up the Internet etc as a bad thing! Yes maybe some of it is nasty but most of it is good!

If someone thinks of a Chatrooms who hasnt been one on before would prob think as it as a nasty place!! But they are much wrong. Some chats are nasty i agree but most and fun and a very safe place to be in! The best thing is that they are Moderated!

Just wanted to get that off my chest :)
